Apply for Job Training

NCIMED's Durham workforce project provides free training for Durham County residents in the skills and knowledge needed to fill jobs in local telecommunications and utility companies.

The program is taking applications for training beginning in January 2014.

Job Opportunities

Local telecommunications and energy companies face a shortage of skilled workers in two key areas:

  • Broadband technicians – who install and service cable and Internet service for neighborhoods, homes and businesses.
  • Utility linemen – who install and repair electric lines, poles and equipment for utility companies.

Both offer offer high wages, benefits and career advancement:

Training

Courses vary by job type, but may include: 

  • Commercial Driver's License, Class A preparation, required for many  jobs in the energy industry.
  • Telecommunications broadband instruction.
  • Construction and Skilled Trades (CAST) certification.
  • Basic computer skills for job searches.
  • Resume writing and interview preparation.
  • Job "finding and keeping" skills.
  • Career Readiness Certificate/WorkKeys.

Eligiblity

The program is open to Durham County residents age 21 and older who hold a valid N.C. drivers license or state I.D. and a high school diploma or G.E.D. Participants must commit to two or more months of training, including some Saturdays, pass a drug test and criminal background check, and be able to lift 25-100 pounds and work outside.
